UT Gardens Director - Dr. Susan Hamilton
Dr. Sue Hamilton has been named Director of the University of Tennessee Gardens. Hamilton has worked for the Department of Plant Sciences within the UT Institute of Agriculture since 1983 and served as interim director of the Gardens since July of 2008. She specializes in herbaceous ornamental plants and people-plant relationships.
During Hamilton's tenure as interim director, the Gardens celebrated its 25th anniversary, dedicated the Beall Family Rose Garden, launched the Holiday Express at the UT Gardens and instituted a monthly e-newsletter and a bi-annual magazine to better communicate with the Gardens’ clientele.
As Director, Hamilton’s future plans include developing a master plan for the Gardens. Upon appointing her director, Dr. Joseph DiPietro, UT vice president for agriculture, stated that he is confident that she “will continue to advance the UT Gardens, its programs and outreach efforts.”
Hamilton earned her bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from the University of Tennessee in 1980 and went on to receive her master’s, also in Horticulture, from Ohio State University in 1983. Afterwards, she returned to Tennessee and earned her doctorate in Adult Education in 1995.
Hamilton is committed to educating the public on horticulture and has been honored for her efforts by many different organizations including the East Tennessee Chapter of Professional Journalists and the UT Commission for Women. In 2005 she received the William T. Miles M.D. Memorial Award for Community Service and has been a guest speaker for the UT Honors Program. sueham@utk.edu
