Acer nigrum, commonly known as Black Maple, is a native tree to much of the United States. It is easily confused with Sugar Maple. You can tell the difference by the leaves; Black Maple's are more pubescent with yellow fall color, it has drooping lateral leaf lobes, and stipules present at the base of the petiole. It is a slower grower than Sugar Maple, but displays superior drought tolerance. It would be difficult to find this tree in commercial trade.
