Acer negundo, commonly
known as Boxelder, is a native tree to most of the United States.
As a landscape specialist, you may find it exsisting on project
sites. You may consider removing the tree especially if it is
near buildings, or high traffic areas. It is an extremely fast
growing tree with very weak wood that breaks easily. It is prone
to pests such as the boxelder bug, which have a foul odor, stain
fabric, and can cause asthmatic reactions. It tends to sucker,
so pruning is neccessary. However, it performs well in poor,
wet or dry soils and is quite adaptable to extreme environmental
conditions. Very few nurserymen carry this tree, but it is available
in the trade.
