One of the older areas of the UT Gardens is along the meandering pathway adjacent to Jacob Drive. Formerly referred to as the Tree and Shrub Garden this area has now been renovated to create a series of “Garden Rooms” which integrate not only trees and shrubs but annuals, perennials, ornamental grasses, and turf. This section of the Garden offers the homeowner a wonderful opportunity to see how to incorporate a variety of plant material in an aesthetic way on a scale that mimics the home landscape.
The pathway was built in 1989 and is the first of several of the Gardens’ hardscape features installed by UT landscape construction classes as part of their hands-on learning. The first plants were added to this garden in 1990 and many were new introductions or trial varieties from the USDA and the J. C. Raulston Arboretum. As the area has grown many of the trees and shrubs that ultimately proved inappropriate for Tennessee landscapes or were not introduced commercially were removed. Since then many new selections have been added which have significant landscape appeal and value and are available to the consumer. This area is especially beautiful in early spring when many of these plants are in bloom.
