Often unnoticed but never to be underappreciated are the turfgrass areas of the Gardens. It is on this outstanding canvas that the rest of the Gardens are painted. The turf areas provide an example of the varieties and cultural practices needed for lush properly maintained lawns. The main areas of the Gardens were sod in 2003 with tall fescue and have been over seeded with a triple blend fescue appropriate for the Tennessee transition zone. Other turf areas in the garden rooms are seeded with new cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass that are being tested for suitability for our area. Much of the turf management is done with students in the UT Plant Sciences Turfgrass Science and Management program with oversight and consultation from the department’s turf faculty.
