The shade garden, constructed in 1995, contains over 200 varieties of native and non-native woodland and shade-tolerant plants nestled around the gazebo and picnic area. Gardening in low-light situation is a challenge, but here visitors can get a taste of the many plants that can be grown successfully in the shade. In early spring, this area is alive with the delicate flowers of many types of spring ephemerals and bulbs. There are also collections of Lenten roses (Hellebores), hosta, and ferns. The raised wooden planters in the picnic area serve as a demonstration of how shade-loving plants can be used in containers. The picnic area is an excellent spot in the garden for enjoying a picnic lunch in the shade or holding meetings and events during the spring and summer months.
